Bacon comedy

Rachel Ray managed to take a terribly difficult bacon recipe and break it down step by step. Her readers were ecstatic and extremely thankful.

And if any one knows how to poke fun at bacon, it is Jim Gaffigan.

Happy Sunday.

Jones Bacon Soda taste test

A Daily News Article featured a bacon soda by Jones Soda Co. The taste test isn't biased at all.  Ask a bunch of Orthodox Jewish people to taste a bacon soda and expect a standing ovation. Hardly.

Well, I don't know about you but I plan to do a taste test of my own and I have ordered two Jones Bacon Sodas that come with a package of J & D's Bacon popcorn, Lipbalm, and Country Style Bacon Gravy.  Order yours for only $10! I love the confirmation that J&D provides once you purchase: "Thanks for your order! Soon everything will taste like bacon."

I'm Baack! Brooklyn Bacon Takedown and bacon chocolate chip cookies

Summer is over and I have an entire backlog of piggy posts that I am excited to share!

First, I am excited and patiently awaiting for the Brooklyn Bacon Takedown to occur on Sunday, October 17th from 4-6 pm at the Bell House in Brooklyn.  I asked the site owner to add me to his mailing list through which he will disseminate ticket information at any moment.  Check it out at http://chili-takedown.com/  As soon as I grab tickets, I will post their availability.

Second, a member of the Brooklyn Brunch crew shared a delicious recipe from http://iluvpork.com/?p=547 for Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies!

Ingredients:

1 lb of thick cut smoked bacon
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
2 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
2 egg yolks
2 cups bittersweet chocolate chips
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1. Cook your bacon until crispy and set aside on paper towels to drain excess grease. Yes it is a lot of bacon but we are making a lot of cookies!
2. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper. I used a little bacon grease.
3. Sift the flour, baking soda and salt together and set aside
4. In a medium bowl, cream together the melted butter and all sugar until well blended. Beat in the vanilla, egg, and egg yolk until light and creamy. Mix in the sifted ingredients until just blended. Stir in the chocolate chips and chopped bacon by hand using a wooden spoon. Drop cookie dough 1 tablespoon at a time onto the prepared cookie sheets. Cookies should be about 3 inches apart.
5. Bake for 15 to 17 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the edges are lightly toasted. Cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Details soon after I stop drooling and bake my own bacon chocolate chip cookies.  At this point, I invite Maisah to post the Vegan-friendly version of her homemade bacon chocolate recipe.

Funky Fresh!

Today, I discovered a Google Reader post from a long lost and extremely missed coworker.  Bacon air freshener!!

And while I ride this theme of Funky Fresh, allow me to highlight yet another genius bacon product from Thinkgeek.  Introducing Bacon with the shelf life of a Twinky: Tac Bac - Tactical Canned Bacon.

Too lazy to microwave bacon strips with your bacon genie?  I know that feeling.  Just pop open a can of bacon!

Bacon adventures in Park Slope

If you're a lover of all things bacon, then you must visit two places on your next leisurely Saturday or Sunday in Park Slope: Applewood and BrookVin.

First, let me preface my spiel by stating that I have not been to every brunch spot in Brooklyn but I take my Brooklyn brunch very seriously as I do not like to travel into Manhattan during the weekend unless absolutely necessary (and that really includes Williamsburg, but exceptions are made).  Some brunch spots fare better than others but Applewood ranks among my top favorites which include Roberta's (Cheeses Christ!); Buttermilk Channel; Stone Park Cafe; Get Fresh Table and Market; Alma (for the view); and Clover Club (liquid brunch) to name a few.  Although every place is different, I almost always order bacon and grits (if possible) to compare.

By far, Applewood has the best prepared bacon and the grits are just right: creamy and thick with a subtle yet rich cheese flavor dispersed throughout.  Other places tend to place a greasy, semi-warm clump of cheese on top of an otherwise flavorless grit ensemble.  The applewood smoked bacon is cooked to utter perfection with thick, rich, smoky and crispy (not burnt) slices that melt in your mouth with no traces of grease whatsoever.  Well-prepared bacon like this transcends the material world and makes every thing okay.   As an added bonus, Applewood also serves the absolute best Bloody Marys in Brooklyn that are so spicy, they give you a complementary Ale chaser.

After your brunch, just head south 1/2 of a block on 7th Avenue for a novelty bacon bonus. Brook vin serves a glazed ham bacon infused Bourbon concoction with organic maple syrup.  yes, you can read that again.  It tastes like Bourbon then finishes strong with a smoky, woody bacon flavor.  And there you have it.

Bacon Soap

As a lover of all things novelty, I highly endorse the latest addition to the Thinkgeek family of products:

Why wouldn't you buy a gift that "Looks and smells like bacon, but won't give you diseases if you rub it all over your body?"

Are you ready for your bacon latte?

"Bacon donuts. Bacon and egg burgers. Bacon cooked in a machine gun. Have we left anything out that might make your breakfast extra-super-bacony? Of course: bacon-flavored coffee! Thanks to the syrup sprites at Torani, this frontier has at last been breached, and bacon lattes are just a stirrer away.

The syrup is available through Torani's web site for $6.95 a bottle. According to Torani:

Bacon enthusiasts will recognize the same savory, meaty flavor as authentic bacon in this salty, sweet syrup. Torani Bacon syrup adds savory bacon flavor to cocktails, lattes, sauces and more. Just add 1/2 - 1 oz. of syrup to a 6-8 oz. beverage, and enjoy this innovative new flavor from Torani."

Torani kindly supplies recipes for such classic beverages as the Bacon Alexander and the Bacon Bourbon Sour, the latter of which includes bacon syrup, lemon juice, bourbon, and a strip of real bacon as a garnish. Yum!" (repost)

Yes, i am actually curious enough to purchase this syrup and will report the results shortly...

My First Bacon

Today, another awesome coworker drew my attention to another awesomer product on Thinkgeek:

"You've got a friend in meat

(and he talks and says "I'm Bacon!")

We're always thinking and dreaming here at ThinkGeek World Domination HQ. In fact, we have meetings to do just that (and eat, not that we need an excuse to eat). While nomming on some delicious BLTs slathered in Baconnaise, designerd Christian thought a terrifying thought. "With all this vegetarian buzz going around," he mused, "What will happen to bacon in the future? What if everyone goes... vegan?" (Insert the sound of three dozen monkeys simultaneously gasping... except for the vegetarian employees who were silently thoughtful.) This is our plan." http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/41/my-first-bacon.shtml

Only thinkgeek would create a plushy bacon toy.

and although this next product is not bacon related, i have to share it because i'm buying it for all of my parental friends:

Tell Me Your Secrets Bear!!

The bear says, "Tell me your secrets, best friend" and then sends the recording to your blackberry!! haha!

Bacon Bandaids

If my coworkers were to duel your coworkers in a battle to decide who has the best coworkers, then my coworkers would win!! hands down!

One day last week, a coworker tells me that she is going to bring me bacon bandaids because, well, its no secret that i'm nutty about bacon.

Then, the very next day another coworker says she has a surprise for me and busts this out:

The toy inside

I wore this for the rest of the day

Then the first coworker, sad that she didn't get to give me the bacon gift, said she has another surprise for me and I will just have to wait to see what it is.  I can't wait!

Recipe: Bacon Fried Rice

Last Sunday, my friend M calls me while walking to the drug store to procure drugs for her recently injured toe. This is how part of our conversation went down (not verbatim as I just don't have a memory like that):

M: I need to eat something before I take drugs.
Me: Ya, that wouldn't be pretty.
M: Bacon Fried Rice?
Me: What?!
M: I'm walking by a place that has a sign saying bacon fried rice.
Me: That sounds amazing and is so freaking obvious. Why didn't any one think of this sooner!?
M: I don't know. But i'm going to try it.
Me: Uh, you better. Take a picture of it.
M: I have to get off the phone to do that.
Me: Do it.
[time lapse]
Me: How is it?
M: So good. I should get off the phone.
Me: Do that. I think i'm going to make my own bacon fried rice.

Jessica's semi-homemade Duck Bacon Fried Rice:

1. Call local thai place (in my case, AM Thai on McDonald Ave in Kensington) and order plain thai fried rice. The woman on the phone will say a bunch of stuff you will not understand. Just say yes after every pause and hope for the best. Did you really expect me to make my own fried rice on a Sunday morning?

2. While waiting for delivery, take four strips of D'artagnan Duck Bacon and trim the fat. (Just my personal preference at the time. By all means, leave the fat for extra flavor) Place in large seasoned cast iron skillet on low heat. Duck bacon does not take long at all to cook and should not be cooked any longer than 1 minute per side. Others would say 30 seconds but I don't find much of a difference if its cooked longer.

3. Also while waiting, fry two eggs in a a separate, small skillet. Season any way you like. I always use salt and red pepper flakes.

4. Once bacon is done, cut into small chunks and add with fried rice to same skillet. Stir it up!

5. Place Duck Bacon Fried Rice concoction into bowl with fried eggs on top and Viola!

Its that easy. My brunch table will see this meal many more times.
